Gluten-Free Product Info.
Minnie Beasley Gluten-Free Cookies
I was recently contacted through Gluten-Free Faces by a gentleman named Harmon Beasley Canon. He owns a small cookie company in Denver, CO that produces gluten-free cookies. Good for us huh? I'm all about healthy living, but a girl has to live! So I checked out his website to see what they are up to. Firstly, there is a real down to earth video clip introducing the history of the company by Harmon himself. He is traditional Southern gentleman that grew up in Memphis, TN. The cookies he is selling, are actually a family recipe handed down from his great aunt Minnie. Since he is rather small, I have decided to write this piece to help promote his product. The big guys have more advertising dollars than you can shake a stick at.
I found a couple of cookies that peaked my interest. The Gluten Free Almond Lace Cookies & Gluten Free Chocolate Cookies. Both look like a very untraditional cookie, but still appeared very appetizing. This could be due to the fact that all the cookies are hand rolled. He includes the ingredients labels for these items on his website. He uses no gluten what-so-ever in these treats. Though I have yet to taste them myself, Harmon boasts about his cookie receiving the "Best Cookie" award at a famous New York food gala. That has to tell you he's doing something right. His prices are competitive and his packaging is attractive. You can purchases them directly through their website for you or a gift for a friend.
So here's to you Harmon! Thank you for producing a product for all us gluten intolerant folk. From all of us here at The Celiac Shack, we wish you great prosperity and happiness. Best of luck.

R.O.C.K. (Raising Our Celiac Kids)
Is a free support group for parents, families, and friends of kids on the gluten-free diet for any reason: celiac disease, gluten intolerance, autism, ADD/ADHD, allergies, or personal preference. We concentrate on dealing with the unique challenges that families of wheat-free/gluten-free kids face, including:
• Finding "fun" gluten-free treats for kids
• Menu ideas for school lunches, quick dinners, and sports snacks
• Helping the kids to take responsibility for reading labels, cooking and planning/preparing food
• How to prepare for unexpected birthday parties and food-oriented activities at school, church, and elsewhere
• Halloween, Easter, and other special days - how do we include our kids safely?
• Educating day-care providers and teachers - without burdening them
• Dealing with grandparents, babysitters, and "helpful" friends who offer gluten-containing foods to our kids
• Ensuring our kids won't cheat, and what to do WHEN they do
• Sending kids away to camp, friends' houses, and other times when we're not around to help
• The psychological impact of growing up with celiac disease (peer pressure, teenage years, and more)
R.O.C.K. was founded by Danna Korn in 1991 after her son, Tyler, was diagnosed with celiac disease. It has grown to international proportions, helping families all over the world deal with the unique challenges of raising a child on a gluten-free diet.

"Shack" Attack
What's Up?
We have been busy at "The Celiac Shack" this week working on our blogs and amassing information for our November addition of "The Pipeline". Oh and social networking through such sites as Gluten-Free Faces, Gling and Twitter. Keeping tabs on this stuff is a full time job alone, but we have managed to find the time to add some new products to our on-line pantry. A local women from Taylor, MI gave us a call last week and asked if we had a couple of products that she was desperately trying to get her hands on. Sadly enough we did not have them either. We quickly made the calls to our distributors and ordered the products she was looking for. Her order is already in transit to her doorstep. I am going to list the two new products below. If you also have a need for these items, just click on the product word and you will be whisked away to our pantry. We pride ourselves on customer service and if you have a need for any particular product that you may not be able to find, drop us a line or an e-mail and we will find it and get it to you a.s.a.p.

Isles Of Wheat & Not A Bite To Eat

I just got back from the local food store where they looked at me baffled when I asked them where their gluten-free items were located. I cannot believe that the major chains are still resisting stocking their stores with food that we need. They all have token areas that amount to very little more than a marketing ploy. It's darn near impossible to put together a days worth of meal options let alone an entire weeks worth. If I don't beat these stores to the punch, I believe that we will see a supermarket that will be 100% gluten-free from top to bottom within the next 5 years. No label reading with all the choices people need to do their full shopping. As Celiac disease and other gluten-free related illnesses gain acceptance in the medical world we will see a major shift in what we are putting into our bodies. Until then, I am afraid that we are forced to piecemeal our list together from all over town. Keep the faith everyone, I have a plan!

Gluten-Free Brick & Mortar?

Website or brick & mortar? I spent the better part of the afternoon walking around downtown Northville, MI checking out one of the many locations empty from failed businesses due to the bad economy. Though I am proud and happy of our website http://www.theceliacshack.net/ I can't get rid of the need to press the flesh with the gluten-free public. Though some of the locations are attractive, it's still a lot of overhead for a small business like mine that still has its training wheels on. This search was spawned by an e-mail I had received regarding a gluten-free bakery that just opened up in a near by city. Though I am happy for them and wish them all the luck in the world, I am a bit jealous and nervous. Nervous that a gluten-free store may open so close to my future location that I will miss my opportunity to realize my final goal. So keep those on-line orders coming folks! lol We appreciate your business and hope to see all of you in person soon. A girl can dream!

If you are a mom that may enjoy an occasional spirit, or a father that has been doing without because of availability, stop by theceliacshack.net and sign up for our newsletter. You will find the link to these lovely libation in the "Health Links & Information" section of "The Pipeline". So check it out and CHEERS!
